DR. SID GOES SOLO
Nigerian singer/songwriter Sidney Onoriode Esiri, otherwise known as Dr. SID was born into a family of achievers. His mother was a successful fashion designer and he used to watch his father, actor Justice Esiri, in local Nollywood productions while growing up. Esiri’s clout at both local and national level was enough of a reminder that he needed to work hard. Esiri had long been a national hero when his son considered venturing into music. SID, a 2011 winner of the Hiphop World Awards World Revelation of the Year, set out to make a name of his own, something he could gladly hold on to as his, and not being tagged as “Esiri’s son”.
He persevered, built his stock and broke many barriers until he was accepted. Over the past decade, he’s worked with some of Nigeria’s biggest record labels including Trybe, Mohits, which was jointly founded by D Banj and Don Jazzy, and Mavin Records, his current home. Mavin, which is owned by Don Jazzy, is also home to Wande Coal, Tiwa Savage, and D Prince. The last year has seen him release some hit singles including Yolo, and Chocolate, which are off Solar Plexus, Mavin’s first compilation project as a label. Getting to work with Don Jazzy, a man who is respected locally for aiding the career growth of some of Nigeria’s biggest talents over the years came in handy to push up his credibility.
SID, a qualified dentist, who dabbled in music on the side for years, got his big break around 2002. Oya, a song which featured other local acts Sasha, Eldee, 2 Shootz, Timi, KB and Freestlyle, became a hit. Immediately thereafter, he released his debut single Don’t Stop, to critical acclaim.
His days at Trybe Reords shaped his musical career. He got signed onto the label while studying for his qualifications in dental surgery. He had always wanted to do music so persistent calls by family and some friends to stick to the medical profession couldn’t convince him to drop the microphone. After enrolling in a course in dental anesthesiology in the United Kingdom, he returned to Nigeria to do his Housemanship and Youth Service. He worked a low-paying dentist job in a private dental clinic. Still not convinced he belonged there, he weighed what he made playing at live events and how much his job as a dentist paid. Finally, he chose music, which at the time was already a larger source of income.
In 2005, SID began working on his debut studio album but it never saw the light of day, as he had to abandon it midway. However, Raise Da Roof, which was planned to be a single from the album made waves. He got signed onto Mohits in 2007, and featured in seven out of the label’s 15-track Curriculum Vitae album
In 2009, SID finally released his solo studio album Turning Point. All produced by Don Jazzy, the album included chart-topping singles like Pop Something, which featured DBanj, Winchi Winchi, which featured Wande Coal, Over the Moon, and Something about You. Turning Point also had hits like Ba Mi Jo, which featured Ikechukwu, When this song Comes on, Baby, and Pillow.
His union with Mohits came with a lot of goodwill, as he played at major, local and international shows either as a supporting or solo act. That union was short-lived when Jazzy and D Banj went their separate ways. He was however invited by Jazzy to join Mavin, and has since 2012, been a major part of the label.....
