Scientists create 'impossible material' by accident
Being a scientist apparently involves exactly as
much luck as we've always suspected.
Researchers in Uppsala, Sweden, accidentally
left a reaction running over the weekend and
came back to discover they'd developed a new
material they're calling Upsalite. Essentially,
Upsalite is pure, dry magnesium carbonate,
nearly devoid of any water molecules, something
that people have been working on since 1820.
Upsalite is expected to be used in everything
from home humidity control to chemical
manufacturing, which is pretty damn impressive
for something a bunch of people invented
accidentally one Friday night as they rushed out
of work to get to happy hour. Serendipity.
